We’re back! And we are so excited for another year of challenging the status quo of sports media and sharing some fun projects with you all.
We hope everyone is having an awesome summer and is living up the jam-packed women’s sporting calendar that we have right now — how good!
At Siren, January is a time for reflection, planning and goal setting. We have some things we want to achieve this year to keep supporting our community of women and non-binary writers, photographers, videographers, podcasters and content creators as well as bringing more people in and keeping our community connected.
As always, we do what we can, when we can! We’ll always keep you posted about when we need to take breaks, prioritise our other paid working opportunities and put the tools down when there is no paycheck. Why? Because we want to normalise conversations around capacity, remuneration and labour in sports media.
We’ll continue to update you about our projects, events, opportunities and content across the year. While this newsletter is a great place to get access to all of that goodness, you can also follow us on the socials — Instagram, Facebook, X and LinkedIn — to stay up to date.
We can’t wait to share the very cool things we have planned but for now, we’re excited to kick off the year with some fun stories over the next few weeks that spotlight different sports and people in our community.

Radio presenter and writer Jacqueline Shields has reached out to inclusive sporting clubs across the country to find clubs that are ready to welcome you in 2024!
We are running our Siren Book Club all through 2024 and our next book will be Ellen van Neerven’s Personal Score: Sport, Culture, Identity!
Last year we had the absolute privilege to publish Ellen’s fan diary from the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. It’s a must read.
Book Club for Personal Score will be held online via Zoom on Tuesday 12 March, at 7pm AEST.
Register here to book your spot and we will email you the link closer to the date.
We’re hoping to do more book club sessions in 2024 so if there is a book you’d like us to include, let us know? We’d love to hear from you!
In Melbourne? Ellen will be in conversation with Jeanine Leane at the Brunswick Town Hall this Saturday, February 3, at 1pm as part of the Midsumma Festival!
Tickets are FREE and can be reserved here.

We were thrilled to be able to commission this great story from Kate Robinson, featuring pictures by Megan Brewer, on Taylah Preston, one of Australia's most promising tennis juniors.
Siren is on Patreon!
We have a Patreon! And we’ll be adding some cool things for our Patreon supporters over 2024 so if you can, sign up now!
Funds from our Patreon go towards:
commissioning and paying writers and content creators
running our Emerging Sports Writer Programs
creating opportunities for women and non-binary folk in sports media
The support of the Siren community has facilitated that work and helped support those commissions and opportunities and we can’t thank you enough.
You can become a Patron of Siren today and help us continue to challenge the status quo of sports media.
