Welcome back to regular programming!
Well... kind of!
We love to shake things up at Siren HQ.
Our flexibility and willingness to evolve is one of our strengths and this newsletter, #138 (can you believe it!) marks another evolution for us.
Welcome to our new monthly newsletter featuring exclusive content and access to resources, events and giveaways + more!
Our priority is always ensuring we’re doing the most for women and non-binary people in sports media. From paid opportunities, mentoring and resources and, of course, championing their work from the sidelines, we are always working to challenge that status quo.
So these monthly newsletters will look different each time they land in your inbox. Some months we’ll be prioritising sharing resources for the up and comers. Other months we’ll be advocating for those already in the industry. There’ll be opportunities to get your work published and access to all kinds of great events and workshops and networking.
So welcome to our first monthly newsletter of 2024!
We’re excited to bring back some regular content and still hold a space for storytelling on the Siren platform amongst our other projects. Such as our partnership with ABC Sport to deliver more stories of women and non-binary people in sport to the national broadcaster as well as offer more journalism pathways for women and non-binary content creators.
Managing this partnership takes a huge chunk of our operational time (it is paid work—something we unashamedly prioritise!), but this monthly newsletter will continue to be a space to share stories, celebrate great sports media work, let you all know what is happening at Siren HQ to ensure we stay connected to you, to our community.
You’re the reason we do this!
So keep an eye out for us in your inboxes every month! We’re excited to keep the stories coming to keep challenging the status quo of sports media!

ICYMI—the motorsport edition
Did you get caught up in F1 action over the weekend? It’s an interesting space for us here at Siren as we champion women and non-binary people in sport, and there are not many visible women and non-binary folk at first glance in motorsport! But there are some incredible people working to change that and doing cool things in the space to bring in more fans, drivers, engineers, commentators and administrators.
If you’re interested in F1 fan engagement, fandom and pop culture expert Dr Georgia Carroll has a newsletter called the F1 Fan Engagement Tracking Project all about fandom in F1. Dr Carroll looks at the fan engagement strategies and provides insights across fan cultures like What F1 can learn from Taylor Swift.
We also want to shout out the work of the awesome Priyanka Chadha, the National Participation Program Lead at Motorsport Australia who is doing amazing things to drive more diverse participation in motorsport, especially through the FIA Girls on Track program.
Congratulations also go to our great friends at Proud 2 Play for partnering with Motorsport Australia and Racing Pride to create the world’s first Pride Hub at a F1 Grand Prix at the Australian GP last weekend.
The Pride Hub included a very cool historical display with a timeline charting LGBTQIA+ trailblazers in motorsport, sharing amazing stories like the first ever woman driver, Hélène van Zuylen in 1898, who was a lesbian, a member of the Rothschild family, a baroness as well and had a poet lesbian lover on the side. Incredible!

A study by researchers from Deakin University has found that an overwhelming majority of elite sportswomen (nine in 10) have experienced some form of gendered online harm, including 87 per cent in the past year.
Siren co-founder Kate O'Halloran wrote about the groundbreaking research by Associate Professor Kim Toffoletti and Dr Caitlin McGrane for ABC Sport.
All the latest from the Siren Sport X ABC Sport Partnership
Siren co-founder Kasey Symons wrote more about motorsport for our ABC Sport partnership and covered the world’s first Pride Hub hosted at a Formula 1 Grand Prix which was at our own Australian GP.
